Indoor Plant Stands

Houseplants bring colour and life to your home. They can be placed in any room as long as the individual needs of the plants are met (water, air circulation) and cold drafts are avoided.

Many houseplants do well in darker spaces with only little direct sunlight. Others need to be closer to the light source, usually a window that gets 3-8 hours of sunlight per day, every day.

If there is a windowsill that is wide enough to safely hold the plant without the plant actually touching the window then this can be a good place to display some houseplants, but check the plant’s needs first. Be sure to know how the plant reacts to light before placing it.

It may be necessary to purchase, improvise or make a plant stand so that the plant can be displayed to the room’s and the plant’s advantage.

In addition to providing support for the plant, an indoor plant stand, properly chosen, will add to the room's overall decor.

I have used bar stools, coffee tables, plastic milk cartons, book cases and a number of other means to place my plants properly. However, these may not be suitable when the room’s overall décor is being taken into consideration.

If you are handy you can make your own plant stands, plans are available and you can get the lumber pre cut if you wish.

There is also a very wide variety of plants stands available on the market and finding one that meets your needs will not be difficult, once you have determined what those needs are. Garage sales can also be a source for good plant stand; the stand may or may not need a bit of touching up but can well be worth the effort.

Two years ago we purchased a fine looking cast iron plant stand. One of our African violet plants enjoys it very much.

Your choice of stand will be noticed so be certain to not only match it to the plant or plants; you can buy plant stands that hole many more than one plant, and match the décor of the room the stand is located in.

A houseplant or plants can add colour and texture to a poorly lit corner that could otherwise sit empty, giving the room an unfinished appearance.

In the warm months, we move one of our plants out into the front porch so that it is there to greet visitors when they arrive. When winter arrives we simply lift up the stand, plant and all and bring it into the house to protect it from the winter chill.

It is still placed near the front door but away from the cold and drafts so it can continue to welcome our guests.
