How to Lose Weight and Save the World
69Take a Walk
In the past month I have lost three pounds. This may not seem like a lot to you, however, if you want to take off weight and keep it off, your goals need to be realistic and ones you can achieve without adding undue stress to your daily life. Over the past four years I have lost 50 pounds.
I shed this unwanted weight by burning off more calories than I consume. This was accomplished by eating fresh, seasonal foods and through exercise mostly walking. I walk daily, except in extreme weather. Walking is not just my means of exercise but my principal mode of transportation. This means that I do not drive, own a car but rely on my feet to get me from place to place.
Walking is healthy for me and can lead to weight reduction but it is also good for the environment as I am not pumping any noticeable amount of fossil fuels into the environment as I travel from place to place so my means of transportation sheds pounds but little in the way of greenhouse gases. So is help save the planet while losing some weight.
This may sound facetious to you but think about it for a minute, if more people left their cars at home and walked, rode a bicycle or took public transport to work the cumulative effect of their actions could be significant, so I set an example. This is a win-win scenario good for me and good for the environment which is good for me and my neighbours.
The other part of my weight loss scenario is the food I consume. I eat little that comes in packages or cans and recycle what items I buy that way, cereals and canned tomatoes for the most part.
I produce little garbage and compost the food scraps in a backyard composter which feeds my landlady's garden.
Recycling and composting reduce my impact on the earth; help build soil and potentially create economic opportunities.
I buy products when they are in season, blueberries, strawberries, apples and am able to purchase these items from a small shop that buys from growers which are for the most part located within 100 miles of where I live. This means that the food I buy does not travel thousands of miles to get to the store but under 100, sometimes much less. We do not have a farmers market so can't use it but I grow my own tomatoes and a few herbs.
I have almost reduced my bread intake and am working on reducing my overall gluten consumption, why, I feel healthier and it will aid my weight loss. Feeling healthy and strong encourages me to walk more, pay closer attention to my food sources and to gather more information about the connection between personal choices and global consequences. What you eat and do does matter.
So if you want to lose weight you can do so and also help save the world at the same time, give it a try, all you have to lose is some weight.

losing weight is a nightmare, I have managed to take off 5 stone over the last eighteen months, by doing nothing other than eating a better balanced diet. Sadly these days I can't walk so going for a walk is not an option these days, but I do miss it. I think if you walk regularly you become a little bit addicted to it. One dog I had always brought his lead for me at 9pm precisly; you could set the clock by it, and we had to go no matter what the weather and here in the Pennines we can have some pretty severe winters. But I loved it and really miss it.

Great tips on how to reduce our carbon footprint! I miss living in the city and being able to walk everywhere. Now the nearest grocery store is 8 miles away, so I'm forced to drive.
Great title. If everyone followed your plan, there'd be a huge reduction in the ills that are threatening our world.
Close to my heart are buying locally and refusing to buy processed foods that contain chemicals no one needs.
Three pounds in a month is excellent and 50 pounds over four years is fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing your life-style.
Hey Bob,
I love the title too, and the reference to how your mode of transportation sheds "little" in greenhouse gases...that was too funny! Great hub.
Great article Bob. Really fantastic. I used to think walking wasn't enough to lose weight, but I've been hearing more and more stories from friends and coworkers who are experiencing significant results doing nothing more than walking. This is a relief as running is getting more difficult as it's so hard on the joints. Gave you an awesome and interesting. It was both. Would love to see more of this kind of thing on hubpages.
Great hub Bob, love the local farmers and composting elements to your world view. And congratulations on the weight loss, it can be so hard! Voted Up! :-)
Bob you are a man after my own heart..I love your hub and your way of thinking..It seems as if you have found the secret to a very healthy life..I agree eat as much natural food as you can, leaving that canned stuff behind,, I also think Glutein is not a great thing for us at all...Great hub,
Sunnie
Bob I really love how you have combined two topics, and given some very good tips on how we can save the world, help the planet, and lose weight. Your hub title got my attention, and I am glad it did.
I'm trying to lose weight but I don't give myself credit for a few pounds and then I stop trying for awhile. Good to have another reason to go back to trying.
You have a great attitude, Bob - a healthy lifestyle is not just about what you eat, but like you say, also getting enough exercise, and looking after the environment you live in. Combining these things makes us not only physically fitter but spiritually enriched too. Thanks for this hub.

Love this hub, especially the title. Congratulations on your weight loss! And good luck on leaving a very light "footprint." We're trying to do the same.
